UK Amateur Radio Examination Levels
The UK amateur radio examination system includes Foundation, Intermediate and Full licence levels. The RSGB provides the examination system and directs candidates to its Course and Exam Finder when looking for courses and examinations.
Foundation
The Foundation licence is the starting point for people entering amateur radio. The current examination has 26 multiple-choice questions and a 60-minute duration.
Intermediate
The Intermediate level builds on Foundation knowledge and introduces additional technical subjects and operating knowledge.
Full
The Full licence is the highest level in the normal three-stage UK amateur radio licensing route and builds on knowledge gained at Foundation and Intermediate.
Amateur Radio Exams
The Radio Society of Great Britain currently provides Foundation, Intermediate and Full amateur radio examinations. Exams are normally taken online, either remotely or through a club setting, with candidates booking through the RSGB.
The RSGB's current examination specifications list:
- Foundation – 26 questions, 19 required to pass, 60 minutes
- Intermediate – 46 questions, 28 required to pass, 90 minutes
- Full – 58 questions, 35 required to pass, 120 minutes
